There have been many different attempts at changing / modifying ones diet to improve ones daily battles with IBS. Some of these modifications have been effective with certain populations like in that of individuals who are lactose intolerant. Because of the similiarity in the symptons between lactorse intolerance and IBS it is recommended to have a introductory lactose free diet. There have been no documented cases of a high fiber diet improving symptoms of IBS but it does help with the constipation. Soluble fiber at doses of 20 grams per day can reduce overall constipation symptoms but will not reduce pain.
